ANC says leaked emails an attempt to undermine public confidence in Ramaphosa

The African National Congress (ANC) says its national officials have been directed to look into the methods used to fund campaigns and that the party has not had a policy on how to deal with internal campaign mechanisms or the raising of monies by individual members.

The party was responding to leaked emails from President Cyril Ramaphosa's successful 2017 ANC presidential campaign.

It has dismissed the e-mails as “nothing but a calculated manoeuvre to defocus and detract from the immediate task of socio-economic issues and dealing with the challenges of our economy”, and says it has noted no illegalities surrounding Ramaphosa's campaign.

ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe says the party has also raised concerns about the leak.

There has been an appreciation that our own absence of methodologies of campaigning especially as it relates to what could overall be acceptable in the party, that alone could be posing its own channel.

The other area that is of concern is how these emails purporting to be about the president's campaign found themselves out in the public.
