[LISTEN] How CT maintains its good tourism status despite 'negative reports'

Cape Town has been highlighted as the world's most desirable holiday destination by two different international tourism groups despite the levels of crime.

The city was listed recently as Africa’s most dangerous city by the Mexican Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice.

CEO at Cape Town Tourism Enver Duminy says while negative media can affect the sector, it is important to push out positive messaging.

He explains how the city has managed to maintain its status as a sought-after holiday destination.

Unfortunately when you get these headlines, it does create a perception of reduced tourism.

Enver Duminy, CEO - Cape Town Tourism

How we have approached it to ensure that we continue to receive these accolades is about providing facts. I think when you have media headlines that are concerning, what we do is engage directly with travel, trade and media - both locally and internationally and provide them with the facts. For example, if there is a crime, it is mostly social in nature and doesn't happen in tourism zones.

Enver Duminy, CEO - Cape Town Tourism

We also provide them with some information on the proactive work we do as a destination around reducing the potential for incidents to happen.
