Lana Marks could be the next US ambassador to South Africa

Journalist Simon Barber unpacks what it would mean to have East London-born handbag designer as an appointed diplomat.

The US Senate foreign relations committee has recommended that East London-born handbag designer Lana Marks be appointed as US ambassador to South Africa.

If the recommendation is confirmed, she should be headed over to South Africa.

Bongani Bingwa chats to journalist Simon Barber about Marks's recommendation.

Marks hasn't been confirmed yet, she was passed by the Senate foreign relations committee, but the Senate didn't get round to confirming her before it went into recess. This is strange because all the other nominees who were in the same panel were confirmed.

But if she does get confirmed and comes to South Africa, she will make a great ambassador.
