'I've never heard any woman say she wants to be the best ever paid sex worker'

Kwanele Movement of Survivors founder Mickey Meji says most women in prostitution want to go to school and be empowered.

Speaking to Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, who is standing in for Eusebius McKaiser, Meji says organisations that claim to represent sex workers send the wrong message to the government.

The importance of this movement is the fact that continually in my time in the system of prostitution I've never heard any woman say they grew up wanting to be the best ever paid prostitute or sex worker.

Mickey Meji, Founder - Kwanele Movement of Survivors

All I heard from women is that we want out or we want proper jobs, we want to go back to school and empowerment.

Mickey Meji, Founder - Kwanele Movement of Survivors

When I looked around all the organisations that claim to represent us, [they] would turn around to the government and say: 'We are saying the police are our problem and we need condoms.'

Mickey Meji, Founder - Kwanele Movement of Survivors

Women in prostitution do not get infected with HIV because there are no condoms available, we get infected because we lack the power to negotiate the use of condoms.
