South African writers under the umbrella of PEN Delhi are standing in solidarity with journalists and communities in Jammu and Kashmir, amid a communications shutdown imposed by the Indian government.
The Indian government revoked the region's autonomy last week and imposed a massive communication blackout - cutting people off from the internet and all forms of telecommunications.
Author Zainab Dala says the ban is still in place despite a promise that it would be relaxed during eid.
Even though they said that they are relaxing it for eid, it hasn't happened.— Zainab Dala, author
Not only the journalists are being silenced, it is a complete blackout of communication. There are a few news bodies that have managed to get some sporadic stories out because people have actually smuggled USB sticks with pictures but these are far and few between.— Zainab Dala, author
Dala says they have written a statement condemning the ban.
The statement was made live yesterday and it is just to show solidarity to people within the journalistic and writing fraternity. This is not withstanding that we also are going to make a statement about the people of Kashmir and the human rights atrocities.— Zainab Dala, author
