DA heading to court to challenge NHI bill

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is heading to the courts to oppose the National Health Insurance bill.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize announced last week that the bill is on its way to Parliament.

In a statement, the DA says the bill will not only collapse SA’s health sector but place our entire economy at risk.

John Maytham speaks to DA spokesperson Siviwe Gwarube on the process they will follow.

We studied the bill comprehensively and one of the pitfalls we have identified beside the establishment of the SOE and the additional tax burden that will be imposed on South Africans is the fact that it will curtain provincial government powers quite significantly in that it seeks to nationalise and take into the fold of the national government central hospitals.
