Theft and vandalism in schools cost Gauteng department R120m

Gauteng MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi has released shocking statistics relating to crimes that have been committed in Gauteng schools since the beginning of 2019.

Lesufi says he is very concerned and disappointed about the level of criminal incidents that have been reported in schools.

Eyewitness News reporter Thando Khubeka has more details.

Vandalism and theft have caused the department over R120m.

Gauteng East district is where most of the money was lost, about R10m. The second was Ekurhuleni North district, followed by Joburg South.

The statement went on to say that 262 cases of vandalism and theft have been opened in about 256 schools.
