Movement seeks ConCourt nod for independents to contest national elections

The New Nation Movement wants a section of the Electoral Act to be declared unconstitutional.

Represented by Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, the movement says the electoral law makes it mandatory to contest national elections only through a political party and that goes against international laws that the country subscribes to.

Eyewitness News reporter Nthakoana Ngatane gives a summary of the Constitutional Court proceedings.

Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi argued that the constitution does clarify who can and can't contest elections. It specifically says any South African adult should be able to contest elections.
