MDC calls off protests in Zimbabwe despite ongoing demonstrations by civilians

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has called of its ant-government protest in Harare after losing its court bid on Friday morning.

The MDC and various other groups had planned the demonstrations for Friday to highlight the economic crisis.

Despite this, civilians have gone on to demonstrate in the capital.

MDC Presidential spokesperson Nkululeko Sibanda says the real issue is that the country is at a standstill.

Mr Mnangagwa is not legitimate enough to command sufficient respect from a good number of Zimbabweans. There is a deficiency of governance in Mnangagwa's government. He must do the right thing, stop being excitable about being in power and start thinking about building our country.

Nkululeko Sibanda, MDC presidential spokesperson

Sibanda explains that protestors are unaware that the demonstrations have been called off.

The civilians are correct in terms of their own rights given by the constitution but also in terms of the fact that the regime had two weeks notice and did not act until the last moment. Civilians are unaware of what is happening in the courts.

[the roads] are cordoned off and people will be checked for their ID cards and any dangerous weapons before proceeding into town.
