'His heart was flying free' - Jane Fonda on death of 'Easy Rider'

A heavily sideburned Peter Fonda astride his Harley-Davidson in Easy Rider is an iconic image of the sixties.

This is how many remembered the Oscar-nominated US actor in their social media tributes after his death at the age of 79.

A family statement said he died at his home in Los Angeles on Friday of respiratory failure from lung cancer.

Fonda was part of a family of acting royalty - his father was Hollywood leading man Henry Fonda and his sister, Jane Fonda. Actress Bridget Fonda is his daughter.

In her tribute on Facebook, Jane Fonda said his heart was "flying free".

Leading Hollywood figures described him as a "beautiful soul" who "helped changed cinema".
