Legal Aid employees on strike but offices remain open

Legal Aid South Africa says there will be minimal impact to its services and the courts despite a strike by union members.

Staff have gone on strike over reduced employee benefits due to budget cuts.

The group raised their concerns in May this year, however, they claimed that management ignored their pleas for help.

Legal Aid South Africa's spokesperson Mfanafuthi Shabangu says its offices are open and managers are looking to put a contingency plan in place.

In terms of the courts, certainly there will be some impact, or it be minimal because not everyone is on strike.

Our managers from the various offices have been talking to the various courts that they service to find a solution and put in place contingency measures to attend to your pertinent matters that happen in court, and also to deal with the backlog after the strike itself.

The 128 offices nationwide will remain open and the toll-free number is 0800 110 110.
