'Lack of funds from government has hampered progress at Vaal River Project'

Save The Vaal Environment's vice-chairperson Maureen Stewart says the pollution is at the worst levels ever.

South African National Defence Force (SANDF) was deployed to the Vaal River system to clean up the sewage and fix the water infrastructure crisis in 2018.

Two weeks ago, Deputy President David Mabuza announced his disappointment in progress made, after visiting the Vaal Rehabilitation Project.

Bongani Bingwa chats to Save the Vaal Environment vice-chairperson Maureen Stewart to give more insight on the matter.

She says the SANDF did a good job cleaning the water system.

The SANDF couldn't go any further because they were hampered because of lack of funds. The lack of funds from the government has been at the core of everything going wrong at the Vaal River and things are worse than they have been.

She says it is disappointing that the pollution at the Vaal is at its worst.
