[LISTEN] No evidence Tambo said ‘a corrupt ANC will be far worse than apartheid’
Africa Check has done a background check on a quote alleged to be that of struggle hero and former African National Congress (ANC) president Oliver Tambo.
The controversial quote, which says “A corrupt ANC will be far worse than apartheid,” has been widely spread on social media.
Africa Check researcher Naphtali Khumalo details how there is no evidence that Tambo ever said or wrote this.
Justice Albie Sachs actually went as far as to say that he would never have used that comparison. We also spoke to Dr Hugh Macmillan, he is somewhat of an ANC historian and he has never heard the quote.Naphtali Khumalo, Researcher - Africa Check
It begs the question: Where is this coming from? It has no source, it has no date, it has no reference.Naphtali Khumalo, Researcher - Africa Check
When checking the veracity of a quote, Khumalo says a date and reference are needed.
The first thing you should be worrying about is: Does the quote have a source? Is there somewhere you can go and read about it? You maybe need audio or video of it... a letter, a speech.Naphtali Khumalo, Researcher - Africa Check
