Maimane faces a tough sell if he wants to retain his legitimacy - analyst

South African Foreign Policy Initiative senior researcher Sanusha Naidu says it's going to be a tough sell if Mmusi Maimane is to retain his presence and legitimacy in the Democratic Alliance (DA).

The DA leader seems to be facing pressure from multiple fronts with the latest being a report compiled by Tony Leon at the party's request, looking at Maimane’s leadership, as well as the DA’s poor performance at the polls in May.

Naidu joined Joanne Joseph on the Afternoon Drive to give her take on the whether South Africans are witnessing the political demise of Maimane within the party.

I think it is going to be a very tough sell for him to make sure that he is able to retain the kind of presence, stance and legitimacy. I think what he is now fighting with is a battle based on a very real set of constituency actors who don't actually believe he has taken the party to the levels that he should.

Sanusha Naidu, Senior researcher - South African Foreign Policy Initiative

There are serious factions in the party that want to see him go.

With Helen Zille throwing her hat in the ring now for this position of federal chairperson, I think that is going to be even more interesting.
