News24 specialist reporter Mandy Wiener on Wednesday wrote an article stating that investigators, prosecutors should be allocated more budget than state-owned enterprises.
Treasury's money would be best spent, in the eyes of the public at least, on paying for top class, competent, qualified investigators and prosecutors to go after the crooked and corrupt, she added.
Wiener tells Bongani Bingwa there are feelings of impatience in the country, as people expect National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) boss Shamila Batohi to act far quicker on state capture than she has.
It seems as though this is because of a lack of resources. They just don't have the right people, the right funding and capacity to get to the bottom of these crimes.— Mandy Wiener, Specialist reporter - News24
There has been a lot of resistance towards Batohi within the NPA.
What we are hearing from people is that there is still some resistance from within, there are a lot of people who are still aligned to that faction that was seen to be in support of Nomgcobo Jiba and Lawrence Mrwebi.— Mandy Wiener, Specialist reporter - News24
Wiener says a lack of capability within the NPA is a bigger problem.
They need very competent forensic accountants who are able to unravel the Steinhoff's and look at VBS and the alleged Gupta crimes.— Mandy Wiener, Specialist reporter - News24
Money is needed to pay for the necessary skills, she believes.
SOEs are being bailed out by Treasury but the NPA and the Hawks are in desperate need for money. The NPA needs to hire experienced competent prosecutors and the only way it is going to get these people if they are offered decent salaries.— Mandy Wiener, Specialist reporter - News24
