Does the kind of crushed garlic you are buying meet the required standards?
An opinion piece by Chris Pappas, the managing director of South Africa's oldest garlic crushing company Mrs Garlic, has brought to light issues around the quality of garlic that is commercially available.
He has raised concern over sub-standard products in the market, saying a lot of the research they have done reveals how there are additives in some crushed garlic products and how some substances are not flagged on labels.
On a lot of brands, they actually do put the declarations saying that that the product is not suitable for anyone with peanuts, egg, glutton, cow milk.Chris Pappas, Managing director - Mrs Garlic
One of the things that we also picked up around 2016 was additives that are being put into garlic products.Chris Pappas, Managing director - Mrs Garlic
Pappas says adding preservatives and any kind of additive takes away from the product.
