[LISTEN] Extending school days with after-school programmes to keep kids safe

The IOL is reporting on the need for children to be kept at school and in after-school programmes for longer as a way of keeping them away from crime.

Joanne Joseph speaks to head of communications in the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Tania Colyn about the programmes they provide for schools, as well as the benefits of an extended school day.

We do target low fee schools or no fee schools in the Western Cape and we offer sporting activities like soft ball, baseball, cricket rugby. We also offer cultural activities like dance... any kind of activity that children at that particular show an interest in. It is a voluntary programme.

Tania Colyn, Head of communications - Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport

We do also encourage parents to take an active interest but we are realistic about the fact that many parents do work very long hours to support their families.
