While 50,000 more applications have been submitted to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) compared to last year, only 10% of the applicants have chosen to study at technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges from 2020.
NSFAS administrator Dr Randall Carolissen says there is clear misunderstanding and under-appreciation of the offering.

From our side we have improved quite a bit in the NSFAS administration for TVETs and brought in bigger equity in allowances between TVETs and university sectors but I think it didn't have the required output in the response that we anticipated.— Dr Randall Carolissen, Administrator, NSFAS
