International Stuttering Awareness Day is being commemorated on Tuesday.
Bongani Bingwa chats to Stuttering Association of South Africa speech therapist and audiologist Dr Dina Lilian to weigh in on the matter.
Lilian says 1% of the population stutters and most stutterers are men.
One in every four is a woman and we know that stuttering is genetic with 65% of people who stutter because there is stuttering in the family.— Dr Dina Lilian, Speech therapist and audiologist
She says it is important for people to be patient when they speak to someone who stutters.
