Sarah Rennie says philanthropy has a critical role to play whether by using one's voice, financial resources or networks.

Exploring the role of philanthropy in enhancing social cohesion in South African schools, university and communities, Azania Mosaka spoke to Independent Philanthropy Association South Africa chair and Grindrod Family Centenary Trust chair Sarah Rennie.

This follows the association's annual symposium which took place at the start of this week.

Rennie says philanthropy has a critical role to play whether by using one's voice, financial resources or networks.

There was a challenge in the room at the conference about saying: 'Find your place of privilege, whoever you are and go to the edge of that.'

Sarah Rennie, Chair - Independent Philanthropy Association South Africa

There was a challenge for philanthropists to make themselves a little more uncomfortable and really stretch their networks and resources in order to pull people in that are otherwise excluded.

Dr Bheki Moyo explains so beautifully that philanthropy is not just for the very wealthy but also includes acts performed at a community level as well as organisations in non-profit.

Rennie says the areas that receive the most attention include education.

There have been some very intelligent voices who are experts in education that are telling us more and more that we should focus on early childhood education.
