Man who repeatedly raped mentally challenged stepdaughter sentenced to life

A Johannesburg man, Johannes Oelofse (60) who repeatedly raped and turned his mentally challenged stepdaughter into a sex slave will now face life in jail.

Dominique, who is now 23 years old, is said to have been assaulted since the age of 13.

The matter was reported in 2016 but suffered a number of delays along the way.

According to IOL, Oelofse was convicted in May of five grotesque sex crimes including rape, sexual assault, sexually grooming a person who is mentally challenged, exposure or displaying child pornography or pornography to a mentally challenged person, and compelling Dominiqueto watch him masturbate.

Her mother, Theresa, says the trial was particularly difficult as her daughter was questioned as a child, given her cognitive state.

It was very difficult, Dominique's evidence in chief was very good and the national prosecutor went to great lengths to make sure Dominique was protected throughout the process but when it came to the cross-examination it was really hard...

You sit in court totally alone while you hear your child telling what has happened to her and you see what it is doing to her to recall these memories.

Theresa says Dominique was determined to get justice.

My little girl, she is just tremendous and it was her determination that ultimately won this case.

I can't help to wonder what happens to families that don't have these kind of resources... to fight the system.

I don't want our story to end here, I want our story to mean something to somebody else. I want to be able to reach out to parents that are going through this and say there are ways you can fight the system, don't ever give up.
