South Africans are mourning the death of veteran broadcaster Xolani Gwala.

He lost his battle to cancer on Friday morning at the age of 44.

Many listeners have shared fond memories of Gwala, affectionately known as XG or Mphephethwa, during the open line with Eusebius McKaiser.

XG has been remembered for his smile, optimism and his hard-hitting journalism.

Fellow broadcaster and former 702 host Stephen Grootes says Gwala had the ability to hold political leadership to account while also showing respect.
