Proposed changes to baby food labelling laws to encourage breast feeding

The Department of Health is proposing amendments to regulations relating to foodstuffs for infants and young children.

Among the proposed amendments are new labelling rules for baby food and baby formula, to encourage breastfeeding.

The Department proposes that baby food labels should contain easily readable messages which say “does not contain breast milk” and “breast milk is the best food for babies”.

Lynn Moeng-Mahlangu, Chief Director for Health Promotion, Nutrition & Oral Health at the Department of Health says the draft regulation also proposes that products should also prominently display the age range of the infants or young children for which a product is suitable.

It is mainly to protect breastfeeding and to ensure that mothers, who are using formula, get the information that they require to prepare formula safely.

The law also tables that manufacturers need to label their foodstuffs packaging in three different languages.
