Moving tributes from wife, daughters at Xolani Gwala's funeral

The beloved veteran broadcaster Xolani Gwala has been laid to rest on Saturday in his home town, Impendle, in KwaZulu-Natal.

Tributes have been pouring in since "XG" passed away last Friday after a lengthy battle with colon cancer.

Mourners at his special official provincial funeral included media colleagues and government ministers.

Gwala's wife, Peggy-Sue Khumalo, sobbed as her final love letter to him was read out.

She called Xolani her soulmate, who "showed me the kind of love that dreams were made of."

You were my rock, you were completely dedicated to our children in every way and their strength during the past few days is the best sign that I could have that you were here with us in spirit.

Peggy-Sue Khumalo

In their tributes to Gwala, the couple's children have described him as caring, loving and understanding.

Primedia group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Omar Essack said the company is committed to keeping the broadcasting icon's legacy alive. He was a passionate advocate for the need for access to cancer treatment and launched the #Change4Cancer campaign in October 2018.

We have committed that this fight that he had against cancer, which he fought on behalf of others who had it, we must ensure that’s not forgotten by the Department of Health, by the government by the provinces and the president.
