The Lion and the Lamb the musical is back on stage.
The musical tells the biblical tale of Jesus Christ and was created by Barnie Simon and John Kani.
Directed by James Ngcobo, The Lion and the Lamb tells the story in a vibrant way and in a way only Ngcobo and Kani can.
Bongani Bingwa chats to Ngcobo and Kani to give more insight on what the musical is about.
The opportunity to tell the story again working with Ngcobo again presented itself, Kani says.
The is one thing that Bra John and I have in common and it is our love for mentorship. I was sitting at a theatre in Cape Town called Fugard watching him do a play calledKunene and the King. And when I walked down, I said we have to do the Lion and the Lamb. We are telling an old story in contemporary time.— James Ngcobo, Director - The Lion and the Lamb
Ngcobo says they decided to do the play currently because South Africans need have time for prayer.
We are going through a very sad time and as a father, you see the things that are happening and I just thought we needed to have a moment for a little while and focus on the play.— James Ngcobo, Director - The Lion and the Lamb
South Africa is dying as a nation and the solution lies with society, Kani explains.
We need to remember Mandela talking about a people-centred government, we need to remember to create a caring society and we need to remember the slogans of Batho Pele. The Lion and the Lamb takes a pause and asks South Africans to retrospect— John Kani - Actor, director and playwright
The Lion and the Lion is now showing at the Market Theatre until 22 December and tickets are on sale at Markettheatre.co.za.
