As many motorists prepare to hit the road this festive, tyre maintenance is an important part of keeping your car roadworthy.
Unsafe second hand tyres are also a major threat to road safety and consumers need to be aware of the risks.
Speaking in his capacity as a member of the South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference, CEO of Sumitomo Dunlop South Africa, Riaz Haffejee says the number one oversight that consumers make when it comes to maintaining their tyres are issues of pressure.
The pressure does two things, it makes the vehicle perform according to its original specification and the second big thing is it allows the tyre to have the best durability. You get the best value for money if you check your pressures often.— Riaz Haffejee, Member of the South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference
Haffejee says you should check your tyre pressure at least once a month and explains why it is important.
Tyre tread is important for wet weather performance because it helps to move water away from between the rubber and the asphalt.— Riaz Haffejee, Member of the South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference
He says rotating should be done at least once a year.
Go to a tyre dealer just to make sure where the wear is in your vehicle. The two front wheels will wear faster than the back wheels and then it is always good to take the two backs and put them in the front.— Riaz Haffejee, Member of the South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference
