Top tips to keep your kids entertained when you travel

Going on holiday with your kids and dreading the moaning and fighting that often makes the travel experience a nightmare for adults and offspring alike?

Parenting expert Nikki Bush says the standout factor to keep in mind is that your role in your child's play experience is irreplaceable. This applies as much when travelling.

We can give our children gifts, we can give them toys and games. but if we don't get involved in the play process it means nothing to them.

Nikki Bush, Parenting expert

Whether you're having a staycation at home, whether you're going on a vacation or whether you're going to be travelling with your kids in a car or plane, it's important that parents realise they are still the most important toy in the toybox themselves.

Nikki Bush, Parenting expert

Bush lists her "ten commandments" of travelling with children:

  • engage with your children

  • if there are two adults, join the kids on the backseat from time to time

  • understand that kids usually misbehave to get your attention

  • use the art of distraction

  • try and travel when it would be sleep time

  • maximise family connection time

  • pack a Fun on the Run bag or suitcase

  • have interesting snacks and drinks on hand

  • take regular breaks

  • teach your child to learn how to cope
