It's understood that photojournalist Shiraaz Mohamed is back home in South Africa after his escape from captivity in Syria, where he'd been held for almost three years.
Mohamed was captured in January 2017 while covering the war in Syria.
Relief organisation Gift of the Givers released the news of his reported escape in mid-December last year. According to their information, Mohamed had crossed the border into Turkey.
EWN's Veronica Mokhoali says sources have confirmed his safe arrival in South Africa, but both authorities and Mohamed's family remain tightlipped about these developments.
He arrived at 11 0' clock this morning... It is quite difficult to reveal essentially where our sources come from but it is a member within the Dirco [Department of International Relations and Cooperation] community that says, yes indeed Mr Mohamed has returned to the country.— Veronica Mokhoali, Reporter - EWN
What we do know of course is that this has been a traumatic experience not just for Mr Mohamed but for his family... It's almost three years since he's been gone and one thing that we can say is that there is a sense of relief within the family.— Veronica Mokhoali, Reporter - EWN
