Parents need to get cyber savvy to help protect their kids online, says expert

She's a cyber safety change agent, entrepreneur and founder of SaveTNet Cyber Safety.

Rianette Leibowitz's company aims to save lives by creating awareness for responsible digital engagement and also through helping victims of online abuse. This covers anything from cyber bullying to extortion.

She's also an author and is set to publish a book focused on cyber parenting later this year.

As a parent, Leibowitz says she understands how scary it can be to try and keep your children safe, especially in a digital world.

When I heard the statistics of young people committing suicide because of cyber bullying, it absolutely broke my heart and I couldn't understand it at that stage.

Rianette Leibowitz, Founder - SaveTNet Cyber Security

Once she "started her journey" as Leibowitz describes it, she realised that greater awareness was needed around cyber bullying and also that there was nowhere for people to seek help.

That's when I started SaveTNet because we needed a place where you can go to for help and a place where you've got the forensic analysts, the psychologists, the right people at the police and legal advisors to help you.

Rianette Leibowitz, Founder - SaveTNet Cyber Security

Her upcoming book covers 50 topics but the "golden thread" she says, is a parent's relationship with their child.

It's about having that really good, trusting relationship where they can feel safe to come to you and they feel safe enough and can trust you enough to be part of their digital lives.

Rianette Leibowitz, Founder - SaveTNet Cyber Security

In order to be that parent we have to understand what TikTok is, we need to understand what Instagram is all about and why they care so much.
