It does not make sense for Eskom to seek bonus payment - energy expert

Ailing power utility Eskom wants to payout over R1.8 million in performance bonuses to its staff members.

This has been revealed in an affidavit by National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) acting full-time member for electricity Nomfundo Maseti.

Nersa will be taking Eskom to court next week over the power utility’s demand for a further R69 billion from the public.

Bongani Bingwa speaks to energy expert Adil Nchabeleng about the matter.

They are applying for future bonuses 2020 and 2021 as well. Why would you apply a blanket bonus policy while you haven't even seen the performance?

Adil Nchabeleng, Energy analyst

Bonuses are paid out of good performances in the aspect where there has been an improvement in the system and we haven't seen that yet.

Adil Nchabeleng, Energy analyst

Eskom is still in an ailing state. They are demanding a bonus payment, which doesn't make sense.
