Cronin: SACP more relevant than ever

In an article in the City Press newspaper yesterday, former planning minister Trevor Manuel questions both the role and the legitimacy of the South African Communist Party (SACP).

Manuel asks questions about what the SACP actually stands for, whether its members are really Marxists and if it is a political party or an NGO – or what it actually is. John Robbie and Stephen Grootes spoke to Jeremy Cronin about these issues rising about SACP.

Listen to the full interview with Stephen Grootes below:

The South African Communist Party (SACP) boasts a growth in membership from 150 000 to 230 000 and yet won’t contest the elections, questions have been asked about the role of the SACP and whether the party is staying true to its origins by former Finance Minister Trevor Manuel.

We think SACP is more relevant than ever. It was agreed upon by alliance partner that this is a difficult period for the broader alliance. The partners also agree that the SACP is the most stable and ideologically unified of the partners. We're not torn apart by fractions.

Jeremy Cronin, First Deputy Secretary-General of the SACP
