The Eastern Cape Provincial Government says a High Court judgment summarily dissolving the Makana Municipal Council in Makhanda did not consider the interventions currently in place to salvage the municipality.
Last month, the High Court in Makhanda found the Makana Municipality had violated its constitutional mandate by failing to provide basic services to its community.
The spokesperson for Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane, Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha, says the judge did not pay attention to the local government's arguments.
All the information that was put there, we feel that the judge did not pay attention to it in a fair and open manner to look at what can be done to salvage the situation in Makana.— Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha, Spokesperson - Eastern Cape Premier
The appeal does not suggest that the provincial government is happy with what is happening in Makana. The provincial government is appealing because it feels the judgment did not pay attention to interventions that are happening there.— Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha, Spokesperson - Eastern Cape Premier
We appealing so that we could be able to do work as demanded by the Constitution to service those communities.— Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha, Spokesperson - Eastern Cape Premier
