[LISTEN] Is a new smart city in Gauteng feasible?

Ntiyiso Consulting Group CEO and industrialist Alex Mabunda says a plan to develop a smart city in Lanseria is commendable but there may be some blind spots that the president has to be aware of.

President Cyril Ramaphosa first mentioned the plan in 2019 and spoke of it once again in his 2020 Sona.

The reality of it if you are going to build a new city, that has to be underpinned by some form of an economic imperative.

Alex Mabunda, Group CEO and Industrialist - Ntiyiso Consulting

When I look at the issue of Lanseria, of course it is within close proximity to economic hubs such as Johannesburg and Pretoria but that being said, you are sitting with old infrastructure where there are old buildings that are dilapidated. I am not sure whether there is demand for a new real estate....

Alex Mabunda, Group CEO and Industrialist - Ntiyiso Consulting

I have seen from the president's speech that the development bank will be putting in money for infrastructure and I am also worried about that because normally it should be business that drives development and the development of infrastructure can then be shared between developers and government using what we call development contribution.

Alex Mabunda, Group CEO and Industrialist - Ntiyiso Consulting

The fact that it is not a private sector driven project, I am slightly worried.
