Missing student Alfa Mpetsheni being held by Shanghai security bureau - mother

The mother of missing South African student Alfa Mpetsheni has confirmed that he has been located and is being detained by the Shanghai security bureau.

Mpetsheni, a 25-year-old student studying at the Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, went missing in January.

Speaking to Joanne Joseph, an emotional Thuli Mpetsheni said she does not know the circumstances surrounding her son's detainment but it appears his visa has expired.

Mpetsheni said he and her husband have been in contact with Alfa.

On Friday the 14th we got a call from the consulate saying that they were contacted by police from Shanghai saying they are arranging for a call so that they can put us on the line.
