[LISTEN] Unpacking the concept non-binary

Non-binary is the umbrella term for all gender expressions, identities and experiences that fall outside of the binary gender system: boy/girl, says clinical sexologist Dr Eve.

She shared with listeners a more elaborate description of the term and how it has evolved.

My colleagues, whose latest book is called 'Life Isn't Binary: On Being Both, Beyond, and In-Between', don't talk about a spectrum, they reject that now and talk about a landscape.

Because of human rights movement, people took up the position of actually 'we don't want to fit into one of those boxes' because there are so many communities online where people could engage and find out, by listening to other people, could identify themselves as being other/other than either male or female....
