Missing Queens High School pupil found at Maponya Mall

One of the pupils reported missing in Gauteng on Monday has been found.

The teenager who was allegedly kidnapped from outside Queens High School in Kensington on Monday was found at the Maponya Mall, the Gauteng Education Department has confirmed.

It is believed that the pupil was kidnapped while waiting for his lift at the school's gate.

Authorities, however, are still in search of a grade 8 girl who went missing also on Monday from the Lantern School for Children with Special Needs in Roodepoort.

Clement Manyathela speaks to the department's spokesperson Steve Mabona and EWN reporter Mia Lindeque to weigh in on the kidnapping.

The details around his return are quite sketchy and it is difficult for us to say what transpired and the circumstances surrounding this kidnapping. We are encouraged that the pupil has been found and we can confirm that he was found at Maponya Mall.

Steve Mabona, Spokesperson - DBE

The police are investigating the matter and more details of the kidnapping will be given, Mabona explains.

We are happy that the pupil has been found. We have committed to overhauling the department's safety policy however, we need to understand the circumstances around all the incidences that have happened.

Steve Mabona, Spokesperson - DBE

Lindeque says she spoke to the grade 8 pupil's parents.

I spoke to the uncle and detailed how the boy was found. What we have been told is that the boy was apparently picked up by an e-hailing driver and taken to Maponya Mall; we understand that is where the police found the boy.
