The council meeting which was meant to elect a new Tshwane mayor has collapsed after the African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) staged a walk out.
The two parties are persistent with their calls for speaker Katlego Mathebe to resign.
EFF Tshwane chair MoAfrika Mabongwane explains why they walked out.
We had a suspicion that the speaker wanted to rig the vote so that we can end up with a mayor that we don't want. In yesterday's programming meeting, she even decided that the voting must take place outside of the council chambers which is something that leaves much to be desired.— MoAfrika Mabongwane, EFF Tshwane chair
The Democratic Alliance (DA) believes the parties are compromising service delivery in the region as a budget needs to be passed soon.
Mabongwane insists that the leadership incapable.
They have been imposing themselves on us and doing everything in their power to ensure that they stay...— MoAfrika Mabongwane, EFF Tshwane chair
We are giving a simple demand that your mayor has resigned, so we also want you to resign. Why can't you do that to honour what the majority of councillors are saying.— MoAfrika Mabongwane, EFF Tshwane chair
