Dept of Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says it's only a healthcare professional who can make a decision to close a school.

The Department of Basic Education has published a set of guidelines for all childcare facilities and schools amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The guidelines include information on travel, hygiene, educating children and staff on coronavirus as well as what action to take when a case is confirmed in a childcare facility or school.

The Department of Health announced on Thursday that the number of confirmed cases in the country has now reached 17.

Clement Manyathela speaks to the Department of Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga.

In terms of the temporal closures of the school, we are saying it is only the health official from the department of health who can make that decision not the school itself.

Elijah Mhlanga, Head of communications - Department of Basic Education

Not the principal, not even the SGB can close the school so please remain calm, this matter is being managed.
