Information about Covid-19 coronavirus

PanSALB pushes for COVID-19 information to be available in indigenous languages

The Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) is on a mission to ensure that information about COVID-19 is available in indigenous languages. It is also looking at ways people could come up with creative ways to help combat the spread of coronavirus.

Clement Manyathela on the Midday Report spoke to PanSALB chairperson Dr David Maahlamela to find out more.

This is an initiative that not only one organisation can be able to achieve successfully. Looking at one township, it will be near-impossible for one institution to ensure that information is adequately distributed. That is why so far we have offered our in-house services in terms of translating almost every essential information that is sent out.

Dr David Maahlamela, PanSALB - Acting CEO

We have made a call to everyone who is able to assist us, whether be it through translating some of these documents, or even disseminating them.

We are looking at people who can also come up with creative ways to ensure that this information goes to the masses.

Dr David Maahlamela, PanSALB - Acting CEO

Translation is one of the efforts, [also] interpreting, particularly for the South African sign language community.
