Chloroquine Phosphate

Chloroquine phosphate is a drug that has been used to prevent and treat malaria and a number of bacteria.

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has given approval for Austell Pharmaceuticals to donate 500,000 Chloroquine phosphate tablets for use by the Department of Health.

Chloroquine phosphate is a drug that has been used to prevent and treat malaria and a number of bacteria.

With continued trials being done to curb COVID-19, it has been suggested that the drug could possibly reduce the number of days that patients spend in hospital and the amount of time patients remain infectious.

Austell Pharmaceuticals CEO Suhail Gani says South Africa is following the trends of several countries which have the drug included in their guidelines.

Gani says China, Belgium and South Korea have also adopted Chloroquine phosphate in their COVID-19 treatment guidelines, while the drug has been recommended for use in France, Australia and the US.

There is ongoing clinical trials being done and as they are doing trials on patients, new and more evidence is emerging....

Chloroquine phosphate has seen in some instances to come to the rescue of some patients, reducing the number of days spent in hospital.

The first thing to note is that less than 20% of COVID-19 cases are serious, most people get it and seems to be like flu-like symptoms and disappeared. What the guideline states at the moment is that this drug should be used in patients who have underlying conditions such as heart or lung conditions or patients suffering with severe disease.

It is important to note that the person who takes this decision is the doctor and they will decide whether one required it or not.
