The revered South African HIV scientist passed away at a Durban hospital on Tuesday after COVID-19-related complications.

The death of Professor Gita Ramjee has left many devastated by the news.

The Aurum Institute chief scientific officer for HIV prevention passed away at a Durban hospital on Tuesday after suffering COVID-19-related complications.

It's understood she had complications arising from asthma and pneumonia.

Ramjee mentored chief operating officer for health research Vinodh Edward.

Edward joined Joanne Joseph on the Afternoon Drive to share his memories of her.

Probably one of the most remarkable women you would have met. A really dedicated, passionate researcher who also focused a lot on her family.

Vinodh Edward, Chief operating officer for health research - The Aurum Institute

Gita was not a boastful person, a person whose life was focused more on how she could make an impact on other people.

Vinodh Edward, Chief operating officer for health research - The Aurum Institute

She actually gave me my first opportunity to work in clinical research. I think everybody is battling to come to grips with this, more because we are unable to mourn her in the way that we are normally used to mourning people.
