Include persons living with disabilities in fight against COVID-19 - ministry
Deputy Minister at Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Prof. Hlengiwe Mkhize has made a plea that persons living with disabilities be supported and included in the fight against COVID-19.
On Monday, Mkhize spoke about how containment measures can be isolating for those who rely on the support of others.
She joined Joanne Joseph on the Afternoon Drive to speak more on the matter.
If you take, for instance, the key messages of improving on hygiene - washing of hands, social distancing and compliance of the lockdown - we must remember if you talk about some of those critical points for preventing the spread, is to realise that some with disabilities might not be able to wash on their own without the support of others.Hlengiwe Mkhize, Deputy Minister at Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities
They are saying: 'You talk transport but you don't say anything about us. When shops are open for limited hours, are we allowed, like the elderly, to be given a special opportunity to go in first.' It is those considerations that we are appealing that within these 21 days, persons with disability needs should be at the centre of the COVID Command Centre.Hlengiwe Mkhize, Deputy Minister at Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities
