ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte has slammed Welkom mayor Nkosinjani Speelman for a racial slur made in a viral video.

African National Congress (ANC) deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte has slammed Welkom mayor Nkosinjani Speelman for the derogatory and racist remarks made while addressing soldiers on the enforcement of lockdown rules.

In the video which went viral this week, Speelman is heard encouraging the South African National Defence Force members to "skop and donder" and proceeds refer to Bronville locals as "boesman".

He has since been suspended.

Any derogatory, racist remark by any person is unacceptable, there is no mitigation for or against it, you simply have to deal with it from the point of view that you can't accept it.

Jessie Duarte, ANC deputy secretary-general

It is not going to be tolerated.

Jessie Duarte, ANC deputy secretary-general

We have to adopt the practice of understanding each other as equal to each other.

Jessie Duarte, ANC deputy secretary-general

It is important that people understand that he did not speak for the ANC and not in our name when he made those remarks.
