South Africa exceeds UN Millenium Development Goals for reversing HIV spread

South Africa has exceeded the UN Millenium Development Goals of reversing the spread of HIV.

This is according to a new report by the United Nations Programme on HIV/Aids (UNAids).

The report states that South Africa has reversed its decline in life expectancy within 10 years, rising from 51 years in 2005 to 61 by the end of 2014. This is largely attributed to a massive increase in access to antiretroviral therapy.

UNAids says that in the past five years, Aids-related deaths in the country have declined by 58%.

Despite the encouraging news, Dr Fareed Abdullah, CEO of the South African National Aids Council (Sanac), says that more work has to be done in continuing this trend.

South Africa has just over three million people on treatment. One country with such a large contribution is a truly remarkable achievement. We should be proud of this. We have a lot more to do for HIV prevention in South Africa.

Dr Fareed Abdullah, CEO of Sanac
