At an overall cost of R135 million, and R6 million each; the security upgrades on 21 two-bedroomed houses for the South African National Defence Force in President Jacob Zuma's home have been quoted by Police Minister Nathi Nhleko as the largest expense on the entire private estate.

The houses are located outside the perimeter of the President’s private home and EWN reporter Rahima Essop gives us feedback after a recent media visit.
On the outskirts of the President's Nkandla home is were you will see the cluster of thatched houses. Each home has a kitchenette, bathroom and is unfurnished. Only a few have been occupied by police officers because the homes have allegedly fallen victim to vandals.— Rahima Essop, EWN reporter
