Two new studies show that it's possible to reduce both AIDS related incidents and other conditions with the early introduction of anti-retrovirals to HIV patients.
The studies also show that it's possible to reduce infection by treating people early.
Africa Melane spoke to Dr Francesca Conradie of the Wits Clinical Health HIV Research Unit who confirmed that these new studies are an exciting advance in treating HIV/AIDS, Conradie explains that this new information is "the beginning of the end" of HIV/AIDS.
We can render people non-infectuous by treating them with anti-retrovirals early and the study that was published recently shows that we can do this in a 2 year period ... So if we can find people early who are HIV infected, initiate appropriate therapy then we make them well and stop them infecting anyone else.— Dr Francesca Conradie
