Greater awareness needs to be created about women’s rights to access legal and safe abortions in South Africa.
This according to Professor Elna McIntosh, the Director of DISA Sexual and Reproductive Health Care.
McIntosh says that the sea of posters advertising illegal abortions shows that the unsafe practice is rife. The posters found in cities all across the country make it difficult to clamp down on the illegal practitioners.
There are multiple reasons why illegal abortions still exist, despite legislation passed in 1997. I think South Africans are still very conservative - most people are anti-choice. The burn out rate for nurses and doctors is high among the legal practitioners. It is all about education; I believe we need a helpline.— Elna McIntosh, the Director of DISA Sexual and Reproductive Health Care
