Tito Mboweni‚ ex-Minister of Labour and former Governor of the South African Reserve Bank‚ will join Wits University from August 1 as an Honorary Professor at the School of Economic and Business Sciences. This is a role he also fulfils at Stellenbosch University.
Udo Carelse (standing in for John Robbie) spoke to him about his new role at Wits, as well as his other new role as one of the non-Executive Directors at the BRICS (New Development Bank) regional bank opening in Johannesburg.
Mboweni mentions that his role as Honorary Professor is a 'small role' that means that he will spend a morning or afternoon with academics or students at the School of Economics and Business Sciences , sharing his experience and views on topical and historical economic issues.
Mboweni also spoke to Udo about the economic issues in South Africa, particularly in the crisis facing the mining industry.
Asked if he will ever take up a role as a Minister in South Africa again, he responds:
I've gone beyond the role of Minister in my lifetime. I've become more global than local.— Tito Mboweni, Honorary Professor at the School of Economic and Business Sciences
