There is a loss of public confidence in SAPS National Commissioner

National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega has successfully met the deadline demanding her to convince the president that she is fit to hold office, but policing researcher Eldred de Klerk says that the question posed to the Commissioner should have been posed differently. De Klerk recommends that the SAPS be put under review - ask Phiyega and SAPS officers why they should in fact continue to serve the public.

Speaking to Sam Cowen on Weekend Breakfast, de Klerk explained that Phiyega's entire term has been a series of apologies for the SAPS' various mishaps and shortfalls and thus the South African public has significantly lost confidence in the National police Commissioner - and by extension the South African Police Service as well.

As South Africans we deserve better than that.

Eldred de Klerk, Policing Researcher

De Klerk says that the SAPS should implement the National Strategic Plan 2030, which has recommendations around the appointment of the National Police Commissioner and his/her deputies.

We need to go back to unfortunately a position that I didn't think we could be in, where we are actually putting our police as a public service under review.

Eldred de Klerk, Policing Researcher
