Is the ANC ready for a female president?

The ANC Women’s League will hold its elective conference for the first time since the last one in 2008/09. Women’s League President Angie Motshekga has criticised the ANC’s patriarchial nature and ‘power-hungry men who manipulate women to serve their own interests’.

Udo Carelse speaks to National Spokesperson for the ANC Womens League, Edna Molewa about their upcoming elective conference and their view that the ANC is not ready for a female president due to its patriarchal nature.

Molewas says that she has a problem with the patriarchal nature of the ANC (and society). Although she says that it’s not doom and gloom, as some men in the ANC helped to adopt the 50% policy to empower women into leadership positions. She insists though that the ANC hasn’t been ready for this transition to a female leader.

We have all fought for this liberation. Before we think about men, we should think about women. Let’s fight these patriarchal tendencies together.

Edna Molewa, National Spokesperson for the ANC Womens League

Reacting to this interview above, a caller suggests that the women in the ANC need to look at themselves and ask if THEY are ready for a female leader, as they form a large number that could all vote a female into leadership.
